Tips For Moving Your Snake Terrarium Safely Between Homes
Spring and autumn are popular times to move house because people wish to take care of this chore while temperatures are moderate. As someone who is nearing their moving date, you already have a large list of moving tasks to take care of. However, have you researched yet the best way to transfer your snake and its terrarium between your old and new residence? Many people (possibly including your removalists) have a fear of snakes, so this is one task which needs to be carefully thought out in advance. Here are two tips to make sure your slithering friend arrives at their new home in a relaxed state.
Transport Your Snake
Unless you are flying to your new home, it is best to transport your snake in your car to its new residence. If this is not possible, then it should be placed in the cab of the moving truck rather than in the back with all the furniture. The reason for this is because snakes are cold-blooded animals and this means it is difficult for them to regulate their body temperature. Since the back of a moving truck is not climate controlled, putting them back there means they could be left sitting in extreme temperatures.
The easiest way to transport your snake is to remove them from their terrarium on moving day and place them inside a soft pillowcase. Tie a knot in the top of the pillowcase to keep them inside and then pack this inside a plastic container with a lid. Make sure you use a pair of scissors to poke air holes into the sides and top of the plastic container, so there is plenty of air flowing through. Once the lid is on, the snake is secure until it reaches its destination.
Transport The Terrarium
Glass terrariums need the same careful attention to packing like the rest of your fragile belongings. Blankets placed within the terrarium will stop the inside of the glass from being scratched. Blankets, cushioned padding or bubble wrap placed on the outside of the terrarium ensures the glass is not smashed if another item comes into contact with it.
Make sure you throw out all mulch and vegetation inside the tank, particularly if you are moving between the states. There are quarantine laws between the states regarding the importation of vegetation, so it is wise to throw it all out and purchase new supplies once you reach your new home. Also, remove all objects from the terrarium and transport them separately, so they do not move around within the terrarium during the transfer.
These tips will make sure that when the terrarium is unpacked and set up at the end of the move, your snake doesn't have to wait too long to get back into familiar surroundings.
