How to Pack Cleaning Supplies for a Move
Getting ready for a big move? Whether you're moving cross country or just down the road, there's a lot that needs to be done, and it can help to break the process up into manageable bits. Here's a look at how to move cleaning supplies in particular.
1. Consolidate
If you have multiple bottles of the same product, take the time to consolidate those cleaners and get rid of the empty bottles. For instance, if you have a seperate bottle of toilet cleaner in each of your bathrooms, consolidate and get down to one cleaner so that you don't have to pack as much.
2. Purge
Just as you purge the rest of your possessions, you should take some time to purge your cleaning supplies. Get rid of knackered old rags and cleaning products you no longer use. If you don't want to throw those items away, you may be able to donate them—homeless shelters and similar organisations may be willing to take them, or your friends or neighbours may even want old supplies.
3. Pack Last
Ideally, you should pack your cleaning supplies last. So that they are accessible, gather everything together about a week before your move. Put cleaning products, rags, dusters and similar small items in a plastic storage bin or an open cardboard box. Then, put your vacuum cleaner, mop and broom in the same area.
When the removalists arrive, you can let them take everything out except the cleaning supplies. Then, if you like, you can give your home one last cleaning before you say goodbye and leave.
4. Unpack First
When you get to your new home, you may want to do a bit of cleaning before you start unpacking. If you decide to put the cleaning supplies in the removalist truck, put them at the back of the truck so you can unload them first.
If you decide to clean the house after the removalists take your stuff, as described above, bring the cleaning supplies in your own car. With that approach, the supplies are also easily available when you get to your new home.
5. Use Plastic
To prevent cleaners from spilling on the road, make sure to move all spray nozzles to the "off" position. To be on the safe side, you may also want to remove lids, cover the tops of the bottles with a bit of cling film, and then replace the lid. You may also want to put plastic bin liners over brooms and mops to keep them from touching other items you have packed.
