Tips for Preventing Damp When Using Caravan Storage

When you love the thrills and comforts that come with taking your caravan on the road, it's always worth prioritising your storage options when it's not in use. In addition to using a caravan storage facility, you should take steps toward ensuring it doesn't encounter damp. With your efforts, you can prevent mould and mildew arising, which then ensures your caravan remains in an excellent condition.

Check all of your seals thoroughly

Just like when you waterproof your home, you should check your caravan for potential leaks. Look at the door and window seals, as well as other entry points. If the seals look weak or if they start to let water through following wet periods, reseal them. If you're using boat storage or caravan storage during the summer when there isn't much rain, produce some yourself. Pour water from the outside around each seal and either ask someone to sit inside and check, or go back in and look for yourself.

Disinfect and dry before using caravan storage

Even if you keep your caravan meticulously clean throughout the year, it's worth disinfecting it and drying it thoroughly before placing it into storage. Using a disinfectant that targets mould allows you to eliminate the patches in your boat or caravan that you can't see with the naked eye. As a result, the mould is less likely to build up while you're not using it. To dry your caravan thoroughly, use a dehumidifier for a couple of hours. As they remove damp from the air, they're excellent for promoting dryness.

Consider ventilating your caravan regularly

If you use a storage facility that's within easy reach of your home, visit it every month to open the doors and windows. Although tough seals prevent water from seeping in and drying it reduces your risk of mould, there's no substitute for everyday ventilation. Condensation occurs when ventilation is inadequate. When you allow it to build for weeks on end, you could return to your caravan to find the smell of damp greeting you. Fortunately, it only takes a couple of hours of your time to significantly reduce the risk.

Use tricks to dehumidify even when you're not there

Both cat litter and dehumidifier crystals will remove some condensation from the air while you're not using your boat or caravan. Although they're not as effective as dehumidifiers and ventilation, they can bridge the gap between your other efforts.

With a continuous commitment to keeping your caravan or boat dry, you can prevent mould and damp from running wild in your absence.
